Professor Gašević brings fresh AI perspectives to MIT researchers and students
Professor Dragan Gašević, Distinguished Professor of Learning Analytics in the Faculty of Information Technology and Director of the Centre for Learning Analytics at Monash University, visited the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT) from 8 to 10 December 2025 as part of a collaborative initiative led by the Research Cluster on AI and Metaverse in Education. During his four-day stay, Professor Gašević led a series of activities designed to strengthen academic exchange and advance joint research development.
The leading scholar in learning analytics and generative AI first delivered a seminar titled “Generative AI for Collaborative Learning: From Multimodal Data to Feedback” on 10 December 2025. In this presentation, he outlined cutting‑edge approaches for using generative AI to analyse multimodal data and provide real-time, personalised feedback in collaborative learning contexts, and discussed the theoretical foundations, methodological issues and initial empirical findings of his recent work.
In the second activity, Professor Gašević took part in research exchange sessions with members of the research cluster, who presented their ongoing projects on AI‑mediated collaborative learning and immersive learning environments. Through these discussions, participants were able to explore shared interests, compare methodological approaches and identify concrete opportunities for future research collaboration.
The scholar from Monash University also offered six individual consultation sessions for MIT researchers and students during his visit. In these one‑to‑one meetings, he listened to their project ideas, data analysis plans and long‑term research goals, then provided tailored feedback to help refine study designs, sharpen research questions and strengthen the theoretical grounding of their work.
Finally, Professor Gašević held in‑depth meetings with interested MIT colleagues to explore longer‑term partnership opportunities. These conversations focused on co-developing joint research projects in generative AI for collaborative learning, setting up cross‑institutional initiatives and establishing practical mechanisms for data sharing and resource exchange.
“The visit by Professor Gašević successfully laid the groundwork for future collaborative proposals and publications, fostering a sustained partnership in the study of generative AI, multimodal analytics, and human-AI interaction in learning environments. We will continue to invite distinguished scholars from around the world to share their latest findings and experiences. Their contributions will not only broaden the horizons of our research students, but also enrich the wider academic community at MIT,” said Professor Song Yanjie from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, who is also Leader of the Research Cluster on AI & Metaverse in Education.
